The Journey of Deeper Life Bible Church: From a Quiet Flat to Global Crusade with Kumuyi (GCK)

Every great movement starts somewhere — sometimes in the most unexpected places. For Deeper Life Bible Church, it all began in 1973, not in a cathedral or crusade ground, but in a small apartment within the University of Lagos. What followed was a journey of courage, conviction, and an unwavering commitment to the gospel.

A Quiet Beginning: Bible Study on Campus

The origin of what is now known as Deeper Life Bible Church can be traced to a modest flat — Block 7, Flat 2, Ransome Kuti Road — on the Akoka campus of the University of Lagos. There, Pastor William Folorunso Kumuyi, then a Mathematics lecturer, gathered a small circle of about fifteen students. These meetings were simple Bible study sessions, but the hunger for God’s Word would birth something extraordinary.

Facing Rejection, Finding Purpose

By 1975, the bold teachings on the baptism of the Holy Spirit led Pastor Kumuyi to a crossroad. His messages were not embraced by the Apostolic Faith Church where he worshipped. Eventually, he was expelled. But what looked like a setback turned out to be a stepping stone. He continued teaching the Word independently, and from that unwavering obedience, Deeper Life Ministry took root.

From Fellowship to Church: A Season of Growth

By 1977, the growing fellowship left the university grounds and moved to the premises of the Redeemed Christian Church of God in Oyingbo. Just four years later, in 1981, the ministry found its new home on Ayodele Okeowo Street in Gbagada, Lagos — a space that would become central to the church’s future.

During the early 1980s, Deeper Life formalized several weekly services that are still held today:

  • Monday Bible Study – A foundational teaching time, originally held in both English and Yoruba.
  • Saturday Faith School – Which transitioned into Thursday’s Revival and Evangelism Training Service.
  • Sunday Worship – Officially began at the Gbagada location in 1982.

In 1983, the Home Caring Fellowship was introduced to strengthen personal discipleship and community within the church.

Ministries for Every Season of Life

As the church grew, so did its passion to reach people in different walks of life. Specialized arms were established to support children, teenagers, students, professionals, and even military personnel.

Some of these include:

  • Children for Christ
  • Deeper Life Schools Outreach
  • Campus Fellowship
  • Deeper Life Forces Fellowship
  • International Friendship League
  • World Mission Outreach

Each ministry served a unique purpose, yet all pointed to the same goal: raising disciples and spreading the Word.

A Global Movement with Local Roots

In 2018, the Gbagada headquarters was inaugurated with a massive auditorium capable of seating 30,000 worshippers — a powerful symbol of just how far the vision had come. With additional facilities like the Deeper Life Conference Centre on Lagos–Ibadan Expressway and the International Bible Training Centre in Ayobo, the ministry’s influence now stretches far beyond Nigerian borders.

A Legacy of Holiness and Evangelism

Through the years, Pastor Kumuyi has remained the visionary behind the movement, preaching holiness, discipline, and biblical truth without compromise. While the world around changes rapidly, Deeper Life has remained firm in its stand: a church rooted in the Word, bold in its witness, and unwavering in its mission.
