If you live in Lagos, particularly within the Eko DisCo coverage area, now might be a good time to dust off those generators and fully charge your backup power stations.

The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) has officially announced a 25-day planned power outage beginning Monday, July 28 through Thursday, August 21, 2025. According to a notice shared on their official X (formerly Twitter) account, the blackout will occur daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Why the Blackout?

EKEDC clarified that the outage is necessary to allow the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to carry out critical maintenance work on the Omotosho–Ikeja West 330 kV transmission line—a major infrastructure component that helps move power across the southwestern grid.

“This outage is a result of essential upgrades by TCN. While the work is aimed at long-term network stability, it will temporarily affect electricity supply to several communities,” the notice read.

What Areas Will Be Affected?

While specific locations weren’t itemized in the public announcement, the blackout will cut across multiple parts of Lagos and other areas served by Eko DisCo. Residents should expect intermittent electricity supply and load shedding, meaning there could be power for a few hours at night or none at all on some days.

What This Means for Businesses and Homes

A 25-day daily blackout—lasting 9 hours per day—has real implications. For households, it means adjusting cooking schedules, powering essentials like fridges and fans with alternatives, and spending more on fuel. For businesses, especially SMEs relying on stable power, it could mean loss of revenue, higher operational costs, and reduced productivity.

This situation underscores, yet again, the fragile nature of the national power grid and the recurring pressure it puts on everyday Nigerians.

So What Can You Do?

  • Plan ahead: Charge all devices, batteries, and inverters overnight.
  • Fuel up: Stock up on petrol or diesel if you use generators.
  • Shift operations: For business owners, consider rescheduling high-energy tasks to evenings.
  • Stay informed: Follow @EKEDP on X and other official platforms for real-time updates.

As inconvenient as it may be, Eko DisCo’s decision is rooted in long-term system improvement. Until then, Lagosians will have to navigate the darkness—hopefully, with a sense of patience and preparedness.
